The
Winnipeg Sun,
Sunday July 4, 1999 ****1/2
When
a clown goes looking for love on the Internet, something funny
is bound to happen. In Burnt Tongue,
we watch and entertain Shannan Calcutt as Izzy while she waits
for her mystery man to arrive. With the house lights up throughout
the performance, Izzy chats with the crowd, discussing her perception
of herself and how others respond to her. Calcutt's clown seems
effortless as she goes from quiet and thoughtful to loud and
abrasive in a moment. Her physical theatre training is evident
as emotions flicker across her face, transforming her from happy
to sad almost instantly. But even when she's sad, Izzy can still
be amusing. She says completely ridiculous things so seriously
that the audience can't stop laughing at her puzzled musings
on love, relationships and posture. Not content to wait for
her date alone, Izzy invites an audience member on-stage to
keep her company. The guy is then put to work helping her "practice"
kissing. This is one of those shows that Fringers are happy
to stumble upon, but now that you know about it, go get in line.
