"Making
the most of a bad situation.... Shannan's ability to utilize adverse
conditions into her act added a whole dimension to the work. From
the moment she entered the room, an unceremonious and incredibly
joyful moment, where her face lit the room like a floodlight,
to the crashing despair that caused hearts to leap uninvited into
the throats of the audience, the actress had us hook, line and
sinker. We all know the hazard of the big top tent... Loud noises
that distract the artist from their storyline. Shannan just dealt
with it by incorporating the distraction into her act. An array
of emotions were conveyed by simple changes of expression. This
was a situation many have encountered... A blind date ... except
this one was lined up on the Internet. Anticipating a wonderfully
magical first meeting, the apprehension
of not knowing where the tardy date is, and the fear of losing
the person she'd built up to an incredible height before actually
meeting him. Shannan took us through the full gamut of emotions.
One's self-esteem can be crushed do quickly and easily. Izzy...

can say aloud what most of us will think to ourselves. Shannan (and
the monkeys?) is brilliant at setting the scene and dealing with
the wild card of audience participation. This show will make you

popular culture. At the same time the canny way in which Shannan

as prime players. Interactive Becket! What a concept' ... ' You
gotta admire Shannan's quick witty reflexes as she adapts to the
shifting dynamics on stage and in the audience. She even incorporates
amibient noise from the "real" world outside the Big Top into her
act. This young performer is so uniquely gifted in her chosen art
that she makes it look easy. It is only later that one realizes

Assassins tickets - but now I've seen Burnt Tongue, and am compelled.
This is the best one-actor show I've seen since...since...probably since
ever, and I've been consuming Fringe since '91. Well-concieved,
interactive, and brilliantly enacted, this show hurt in the way
most good theatre should hurt - painful truth. I would go to see
it again and again if I were that kind. Instead, I'll be recommending
it to anyone who will listen.
Mandatory references to the actual content of the show: big hair, planning,
famous people, ACTRA, physicality, self-image, kissing, brownies,
and Internet dating. I laughed; I cried. Much, much better than
Cats.
It takes an intense experience to motivate me to find an expired
flyer, sit in public, and write a pen to the work of a complete
