It's
me, Only Better!
The Saskatoon Star Phoenix
August 8, 2000
- Cam Fuller
I almost skipped this play because an audience member is brought
on stage to give confession. If there's anything I hate participating
in it's audience participation.
However, sitting near the back and hiding paid off and introduced
me, for the first time, to a wonderful creature called Izzy.
She's a clown with a quick wit and wicked streak. She's a fool
who doesn't suffer fools gladly.
In this, her second adventure, Izzy is determined to join a
convent. In the perfectly-paced 45 minute show, Shannan Calcutt,
as Izzy, leads the audience through several highly amusing bits
concerning her ill-fated attempts to meet men. (Like jumping
overboard on a cruise ship). The stories are brilliantly structured
to reveal one bizarre thing after another. Calcutt's ability
to interact with the audience is sensational. Nothing throws
her off ..... not even a potentially fatal moment when the phone
behind the bar at the Wash 'N' Slosh venue rang. (Here's an
idea - take it off the hook!) Izzy found the perfect participant
to confess ("OK, maybe just a big sin 'cause I'm on a schedule,"
Izzy directs) and had a ton of fun with a guy who volunteered
to watch her bag. The ending is too abrupt, although it leaves
room for a sequel. Behind it all is a deep longing to find one's
place in creation, an endless quest for self in an often cold
world. Naw, it's just fun.
